What to Pack for Japan in October: Tokyo and Kyoto

Warm afternoons, cool nights, 2 cities, and a bullet train. Here's what to pack for Japan in October, and how to fit it in a carry-on.

What to Pack for Japan in October: Tokyo and Kyoto

October is the best month to visit Japan, and the trickiest one to pack for. Afternoons are warm, evenings are cool, and rain still happens because it's the tail end of the annual typhoon season. You need layers, a plan, and a suitcase that stays organized through several hotels and a bullet train.

Here's the list we'd use for a week split between Tokyo and Kyoto.

What is the weather like in Japan in October?

Warm days, cool nights, and a real shift from the start of the month to the end.

Early October in Tokyo still feels like late summer. By the last week it's sweater-at-dinner weather, and Kyoto runs a few degrees cooler than Tokyo, especially at dawn and after dark. Typhoon season fades by mid-month, but a compact umbrella is still worth its space.

The famous fall color peaks in November, so October gives you early hints in the hills, not the full show.

You'll most likely be in a t-shirt at 2pm, and glad you have a layer at 8pm, on the same day.

What should I pack for Tokyo and Kyoto in October?

A 7-day list that still fits a carry-on. Adjust for your trip length.

Clothes

  • 7 tops: a mix of t-shirts, tanks, and 2 or 3 long-sleeves
  • 4 bottoms: at least 1 pair of comfortable pants (and maybe one pair of shorts) you can walk 20,000 steps in
  • 1 dress or nicer outfit for a reservation dinner
  • 1 mid-layer: a cardigan, light knit, or fleece
  • 1 light jacket or packable shell for rain and evenings
  • 7 sets of underwear and socks (more on socks below)
  • 1 set of sleepwear
  • 2 pairs of shoes total: one pair of broken-in sneakers, and one you can slip on and off

Socks are the thing. You'll take your shoes off at temples, ryokans, some restaurants, and any tatami room. Bring socks without holes, and consider slip-on sneakers so you're not lacing up 6 times a day.

Everything else

  • Compact umbrella
  • Small towel or handkerchief (many public restrooms have no paper towels)
  • Coin pouch (Japan still runs on a lot of cash, and coins pile up fast)
  • Reusable tote or foldable bag for shopping
  • Portable charger
  • Small trash bag or ziplock (public trash cans are rare)
  • Prescription meds in original packaging

Skip the hair dryer and most of your toiletries kit. Every hotel has a dryer, and the drugstores are half the fun.

How do I get from Tokyo to Kyoto with luggage?

The Shinkansen takes about 2 hours 15 minutes on the Nozomi. Luggage is where people get tripped up.

Bags with combined dimensions over 160 cm (length plus width plus height, roughly a large checked suitcase) require a reserved oversized-baggage seat. Anything carry-on sized slides into the overhead rack with no reservation. This is one more reason to pack light.

If you're traveling with a bigger bag anyway, use takkyubin, the luggage-forwarding service. Hand your suitcase to your Tokyo hotel front desk in the morning and it's waiting at your Kyoto hotel the next day, usually for under 3,000 yen. Pack one night's essentials in a small bag and ride the train with nothing but that.

How do packing cubes help in Japan specifically?

Three ways, and all of them come from the hotel rooms.

Japanese hotel rooms are small. A Tokyo business hotel might give you a bed, a desk, and 2 feet of floor. There's often no luggage rack and nowhere to spread out. Cubes let you keep the suitcase closed and pull out only what you need.

You'll switch hotels at least once. Moving from Tokyo to Kyoto mid-trip means repacking, usually in a hurry, usually before a train. When clothes are already sorted into a small, medium, and large cube, repacking is lifting 3 things.

Laundry is easy and you'll use it. Most hotels have coin machines, and laundromats are everywhere. Turn one cube into the worn-clothes cube by day 3, and you know exactly what to wash on day 4.

Our three-piece packing cube set splits a week in Japan cleanly: bottoms and the mid-layer in the large cube, tops in the medium, socks, underwear, and sleepwear in the small. The mesh top means you can see the clean socks before you unzip anything.

What should I know before going to Japan in October?

A few things that don't fit on a packing list.

Get an IC card on your phone. Suica or PASMO in Apple Wallet handles trains, buses, vending machines, and convenience stores. Load it before you land.

Carry cash anyway. Smaller restaurants, temple entries, and market stalls often take cash only. 7-Eleven ATMs work with foreign cards.

Book the big things early. October is peak season. Popular restaurants, teamLab, and Kyoto's best-known temples at sunrise fill up weeks out.

Halloween in Shibuya is not a party anymore. Tokyo restricts crowds and street drinking around Shibuya Crossing on October 31. Plan dinner elsewhere that night.

Tattoos and onsens. Many public baths still restrict visible tattoos. Look for tattoo-friendly onsens or book a private bath.

Frequently asked questions

Is October a good time to visit Japan?
Yes, one of the best. Days are comfortable, humidity drops through the month, and typhoon risk fades after the first couple of weeks. It's also peak season, so book hotels and restaurants early.

Do I need a jacket in Japan in October?
Bring one light layer. Early October in Tokyo you may barely wear it. Late October in Kyoto you'll want it every evening. A packable shell that handles rain covers both.

Can I do Japan carry-on only for a week?
Yes. Hotels provide toiletries and dryers, laundry is everywhere, and small rooms punish big suitcases. A carry-on with 3 packing cubes handles 7 to 10 days.

Can I bring a large suitcase on the shinkansen?
Bags over 160 cm total dimensions need a reserved oversized-luggage seat. Standard carry-ons fit overhead with no reservation. Or forward the big bag with takkyubin and ride light.

What shoes should I wear in Japan?
Comfortable sneakers you can slip on and off. You'll remove shoes often and walk more than you expect. Skip anything with complicated laces or a heel.

Pack for 2 temperatures, keep the suitcase small, and let the cubes do the repacking. The three-piece packing cube set is built for exactly this trip.
